IN BETWEEN

IN BETWEEN

(english version below)

In a society where everyone should be free to move about, the notion of accessibility is crucial. Accessibility is what allows people with physical disabilities to get around autonomously. The barrier, the obstacle, is therefore often not tied to the person but to the space that receives them, whether or not it offers them access and room to circulate. This reveals an ambiguity, a paradox in how disability is represented: these people are considered disabled, when it is in fact the unadapted space that hinders them.

These photographs attempt to convey these barriers, whether real or symbolic, concrete or mental. Each place, each space expresses a certain relationship to the body and to presence, placed under tension and capable of conveying an inner state.

The work raises the question of a reversal that occurs when spaces made accessible, adapted or dedicated produce the opposite effect. In some cases they reinforce a form of marginalisation, of being set apart, and produce a feeling of liminality imposed on disabled people (“Liminality designates this threshold situation in which the individual floats in the interstices of the social structure”, Marcel Calvez*). Being caught up in the meanders of an architecture that makes you zigzag, following lines toward a potential entrance, or being isolated in a space dedicated to your disability, such as behind a glass partition that creates a feeling of suffocation: neither fully included nor fully excluded, moving in an in-between, an intermediate situation. Through these photographs, I wished to bring out generic spaces in which the people photographed become witnesses and sensors of situations that are lived physically and mentally, and thereby give access to this state of being in the world.
